LIFE SUPPORT: an HIV/AIDS Awareness Event

Our goal with this program is to encourage people to get tested. In previous years, we have had a mobile testing van come out to provide free testing for HIV/AIDS. We also aim to engage in conversation and distribute information packets in hopes of creating more knowledge on transmission of the virus and preventative methods. There is a negative stigma associated with HIV/AIDS that discourages people from getting tested to know their status at all. We want to end that negative stigma by creating a welcoming atmosphere for people to come out and to bring their families with them. We want to eliminate the awkward feeling some may experience so we have combined this awareness event with an end of the school year celebration.

Families can come get tested and bring their little ones with them. Kids can enjoy fun games and free give a ways like bikes, jump ropes, and books as they prepare for the summer. Grown ups can get tested, eat, discuss, and enter some fun raffles as they hear more info about HIV/AIDS.

If we can encourage testing, then maybe we can prevent one more person from unknowingly spreading the virus. If we can have a conversation with someone who has been misinformed about the virus, then maybe we can change further conversations that are negative towards those who test positive.

Every small change, makes a difference.

Gail McGee Gail was a loving mother to five beautiful daughters, including our founder. She was full of laughter as her smile could light up a room. Gail loved to have a good time and hang out with friends and spend time with her grand children. Having passed away in 2008, her family is using her story to encourage others to join in on ending the negative stigma against HIV/AIDS.
